Kids Encyclopedia Facts

David Peebles was a Scottish composer who wrote religious music a long time ago, around the 1500s. He was known for his beautiful songs that were often sung in churches.

About David Peebles

Not much is known about David Peebles's early life. Most of his music was created between 1530 and 1576.

He worked as a canon (a type of priest) at a church called the Augustinian Priory in St Andrews, Scotland. He stayed there until a big change happened in Scotland called the Scottish Reformation. This was a time when many churches changed how they practiced their religion.

After the Reformation, David Peebles left the priory. He got married and had two sons named Andrew and Thomas. He passed away sometime before 1592.

His Music and Importance

David Peebles wrote many important pieces of music. His most famous song is called Si quis diligit me. This song is a type of religious choir piece known as a motet. It was written for four different singing parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass (SATB).

He wrote this motet around 1530 and showed it to James V of Scotland, who was the king at the time. King James V loved music and "liked it very well." Later, another musician named Francy Heagy added an alto part to this song.

Music for Scottish Churches

In the 1560s, after the Scottish Reformation, David Peebles received a special request. James Stewart, who was the Earl of Moray and the son of King James V, asked Peebles to set the Book of Psalms to music. The Psalms are religious songs or poems found in the Bible.

Peebles wrote 105 of these Psalm settings. They were designed to be sung in Scottish churches, with the main tune carried by the tenor voice.
