David Donaldson Robertson (born March 21, 1869 – died September 13, 1937) was a talented Scottish sportsman. He played rugby for Scotland. He also represented Great Britain and Ireland in golf at the 1900 Summer Olympics. There, he won a bronze medal!

About David Robertson

David Donaldson Robertson was born in Shawlands, Glasgow, Scotland, on March 21, 1869. His father, William Alexander Robertson, was a wine merchant. David went to Haileybury School in England. Later, he attended the Glasgow Academy in Scotland.

He continued his studies at Glasgow University. In 1889, he moved to Christ's College, Cambridge. He earned his degree in 1893. By 1895, he became a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer.

When the First World War began, David joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He worked in the Anti-Aircraft Division. David Robertson passed away at age 68 in Idstone, Berkshire, England.

Rugby Career

David Robertson first became known as a rugby player at Cambridge University. He played in the important Varsity match in 1892. This game is played every year between Cambridge and Oxford universities.

In 1893, the Varsity match was very muddy because of heavy rain. Both teams were usually exciting to watch. But the game turned into a "scramble in the mud." It ended in a 0–0 draw.

While still playing for Cambridge, David was chosen to play for Scotland. This was an international rugby game against Wales in 1893. The Welsh team used a new tactic with four three-quarters players. This worked very well for them. Scotland lost the game 9–0 on their home ground. After this loss, the Scottish team selectors made many changes. David Robertson was one of the players who was dropped. He never played for Scotland in rugby again.

In 1900, David Robertson competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. He played in the men's golf competition. He performed very well and won a bronze medal for Great Britain and Ireland.
