David Schomer is a very important person in the world of coffee. He helped start a famous coffee company called Espresso Vivace. Many people say he has been as influential in the world of fancy coffee as Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is in the regular coffee industry.
Early Life and Education
David Schomer joined the United States Air Force in 1974. Later, he studied classical flute music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He earned a special degree called a BFA there.
Career in Coffee
David Schomer became well-known for his new ideas in the coffee industry. He found ways to make his coffee grinders and espresso machines better. He used special tools called PID controllers to keep the water temperature very steady. This helped make the coffee taste even better.
His methods have influenced many coffee shops. Places like Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Portland and Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Chicago learned from his techniques. One expert said Schomer's work was "light-years ahead" of what others were doing at the time. When he opened Vivace in 1988, he was exploring coffee science in a way no one else was.
Schomer has trained many baristas, who are people who make coffee drinks. These baristas then went on to influence coffee shops all over the country. In 1994, Schomer wrote a book about making espresso. It was called Espresso Coffee: Professional Techniques. Many people in the coffee world call it "the industry bible." He also wrote articles for Café Ole magazine.
David Schomer believes that Espresso Vivace has lasted so long because he always focused on making the best coffee. He also credits his business partner and former spouse, Geneva Sullivan. She was very good at managing the business and its money. Espresso Vivace first started as a small coffee cart. It was located at 5th and Union, serving people who worked in nearby offices.
