Playing for Clyde: A Dedicated Career
David White joined Clyde when he was 23 years old. Before that, he played for a junior team called Royal Albert. While playing football, he also worked as an engineer.
He played over 300 games for Clyde, who were nicknamed the "Bully Wee." He became the team's captain and even helped coach the players.
David White's Managerial Journey
Managing Clyde: A Strong Start
David White became the manager of Clyde after the previous manager, John Prentice, left to coach the Scottish national team. White managed Clyde for one year. During this time, the team finished 3rd in the league in the 1966–67 season. This was their highest-ever finish.
Leading Rangers: A Tough Challenge
In 1967, White became an assistant coach at Rangers. Just five months later, he was promoted to manager. Being the manager of Rangers was a very demanding job. Fans expected the team to win major trophies.
During his time at Rangers, White signed important players like Colin Stein and Alex MacDonald. These players later became very successful with the club. However, White did not win any major trophies as Rangers manager. He was sacked in late 1969 after a loss in a European competition and a difficult start to the 1969-70 season.
Success with Dundee: A League Cup Win
After leaving Rangers, David White went on to manage Dundee. He led them to win the Scottish League Cup in the 1973-74 season. Interestingly, Dundee beat Celtic in the final. Celtic was the team that had caused him many problems when he managed Rangers.
However, this success did not last long. Dundee was relegated from the top league in 1976. White stayed for one more year but retired after failing to get the team promoted back to the top division. While at Dundee, he gave a young player named Gordon Strachan his first chance to play. Gordon Strachan later became a famous player and manager for Scotland.
Life After Football
After leaving football, David White worked in a supermarket for a while. He also worked for a car sales company. He enjoyed playing golf in his free time. His son, Alan, became a professional golfer at a local club. David White passed away in July 2013 at the age of 79, after a short illness.
