David Grover Stacey Wingate Jr. (born December 15, 1963) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played for 15 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). David was known for playing as a shooting guard and small forward.

David Wingate's Early Basketball Days
High School Success at Dunbar
David Wingate played high school basketball for the Dunbar Poets. This team was very famous. He played with other future NBA stars like Muggsy Bogues and Reggie Lewis. In the 1981–82 season, his team had an amazing record. They won all 29 of their games! The next year, after David graduated, the team went 31–0. USA Today even ranked them as the best high school team in the country.
College Career with the Georgetown Hoyas
After high school, David chose to go to Georgetown University. He joined the Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team. In his first year (1982–83), he was named to the Big East Conference all-rookie team. This was a great start to his college career.
Winning the NCAA Championship
During his second year, David became a main shooting guard. He led his team in steals. He also scored about 11 points per game. That year, Georgetown won the 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. This was a huge achievement for David and his team!
Later College Years
In his junior year, Georgetown almost won the championship again. They lost to Villanova University in the final game of the 1985 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. David had one of his best defensive seasons that year. He got his highest numbers for assists and steals. In his senior year, he averaged 16 points per game. When he finished college, David was the third-highest scorer in Hoyas history. Only Eric Floyd and Patrick Ewing had scored more points.
David Wingate's NBA Career
Joining the Philadelphia 76ers
David Wingate was chosen in the 1986 NBA draft. The Philadelphia 76ers picked him in the second round. He was the 44th player chosen overall. Many people thought he should have been a first-round pick. The 76ers coach, Matt Guokas, even said David was "one of the people we would have considered" for their first-round pick.
David made his NBA debut on November 2, 1986. He played nine minutes in his first game. On March 10, 1987, he started his first game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He scored 22 points in that game! He finished his first season playing in 77 games. He averaged 8.8 points and two assists per game.
Playing for Multiple Teams
David Wingate had a long NBA career, lasting 15 years. After playing for the 76ers, he joined several other teams. He played for the San Antonio Spurs, Washington Bullets, Charlotte Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics, and New York Knicks. He retired from the NBA in 2001 while playing for the Sonics.
