The Davis Creek Dam is a large dam located in the middle of Nebraska. It sits right on the border between Greeley County and Valley County. This important structure helps manage water for the area.

The dam was finished in 1991. It was built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, which is a government agency that manages water resources. The dam is 153 feet tall and stretches 2,900 feet across at its top. It's an earthen dam, meaning it's made mostly of compacted earth and rock.

What is Davis Creek Dam For?

The main purpose of Davis Creek Dam is to control floods. It holds back the waters of Davis Creek, preventing too much water from flowing downstream during heavy rains or snowmelt. This helps protect homes and farms from flooding.

Part of a Bigger Plan

Davis Creek Dam is part of a much larger project called the Pick–Sloan Missouri Basin Program. This program started in the 1940s. Its goal was to build many dams and reservoirs across the Missouri River Basin. These projects help with flood control, irrigation (watering crops), and even generating electricity.

The dam is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation. However, it's operated by a local group called the Twin Loups Irrigation District. They make sure the dam works properly for the community.

Davis Creek Reservoir: A Place for Fun

The dam creates a large body of water called the Davis Creek Reservoir. This reservoir covers about 1,145 acres, which is like more than 800 football fields! It can hold a lot of water, about 44,918 acre-feet. An acre-foot is the amount of water needed to cover one acre of land with water one foot deep.

Activities at the Reservoir

Davis Creek Reservoir is a popular spot for many outdoor activities. You can enjoy:

  • Fishing: The reservoir is home to many kinds of fish, including largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and yellow perch.
  • Boating: It's a great place to take your boat out on the water.
  • Camping: There are spots where you can set up a tent and spend the night under the stars.
  • Hiking: Trails around the reservoir offer chances to explore nature on foot.
  • Hunting: In certain areas and seasons, hunting is also allowed.

The northern side of the reservoir is part of the Davis Creek State Wildlife Recreational Area. This area helps protect local wildlife and provides more space for people to enjoy nature.
