The town of Dawson was established in 1847. It was the second town to be founded in Navarro County.

Braniff Flight 352 Accident
On May 3, 1968, a plane called Braniff Flight 352 crashed near Dawson, Texas. The plane was flying from Houston to Dallas. It flew into a very strong thunderstorm. Sadly, all 85 people on board, including the crew and passengers, did not survive. Investigators found that the pilot tried to fly through the storm. The plane broke apart while the pilot was trying to get out of the bad weather.
