History
A Look Back in Time
The area that is now Day was first measured and mapped in 1851. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They used special tools like chains and compasses to mark the land.
In 1852, another team finished marking the land sections. They described the area as mostly flat. More than half of it had hardwood trees. The soil was good for farming.
They noted that low areas had trees like tamarack, black ash, and birch. Higher lands had sugar maple, elm, oak, white ash, and more birch. There were also some hemlock and pine trees.
The Little O'Plane River flows through the town. It was described as a shallow, fast-moving stream. It did not have enough water to power mills. At that time, there was very little pine timber and no buildings or farms.
