de Courcy Ireland (born August 1, 1873 – died January 28, 1915) was an Irish cricket player. He also served as an officer in the British Indian Army.

Who Was de Courcy Ireland?

de Courcy Ireland was born in Henzada, which was part of British Burma at the time. His father, William de Courcy Ireland, worked as a civil servant.

Early Life and Education

Young de Courcy Ireland studied in both Ireland and Germany. After his schooling, he joined the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous military academy. He graduated from Sandhurst in December 1892. After graduating, he became a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers.

Military Career and Service

In July 1897, de Courcy Ireland moved to the Indian Staff Corps. He was promoted to lieutenant at this time. He took part in the Tirah campaign in 1897. This was a military action against the Afridi tribe in the North-West Frontier Province.

Later, he served with the 36th Sikhs regiment. He was promoted to captain before December 1910. In December 1910, he became a major.

His Cricket Days

In September 1897, Ireland played one game of first-class cricket. This is the highest level of cricket below international matches. He played for the Europeans cricket team against the Parsees. The game took place in Poona during the 1897/98 Bombay Presidency Match.

He batted twice in the match. In the first innings, he scored 8 runs before being out. In the second innings, he scored 7 runs and was not out (meaning he was still batting when the innings ended).

Family Life and Later Years

In December 1910, de Courcy Ireland married Gabrielle Bryan. They lived in England, in a town called Buckfastleigh, Devon. Their son, John de Courcy Ireland, grew up to become a well-known historian who studied maritime history.

In June 1914, de Courcy Ireland was sent to the Republic of China. He was stationed there when the First World War began. Sadly, he died from a fever in January 1915. He passed away in either British Hong Kong or Peking.
