The Deacon John Holbrook House is a really old and important house in Brattleboro, Vermont. It's located at 80 Linden Street. This house was built way back in 1825 for a very important local businessman named John Holbrook.

The house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, the house is used for professional offices.

About the Holbrook House

The Holbrook House stands just north of downtown Brattleboro. You can find it at the corner of Linden and Chapin Streets. It's right across from the town common, which is like a public park or gathering space. Linden Street is a main road that continues from Brattleboro's Main Street.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It's shaped a bit like the letter L. The roof has a pointed shape called a gable. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard siding.

The front of the house, which faces Linden Street, has a part that sticks out. This section has three window areas. In front of each window area, there's a small, one-story porch. These porches have thin, round columns that look very fancy. The main entrance door is on the right side of this front section. Above the door, there's a beautiful fan-shaped window, which is a common feature in Federal style homes. The pointed roof section above the projecting part has a cool sunburst design in the middle.

Who Was John Holbrook?

The Holbrook House was built in 1825 by a local carpenter named Nathaniel Bliss. It seems that Bliss also designed the house himself. The house was made for John Holbrook, who was a very busy and successful person in the area.

John Holbrook was originally from Massachusetts. He worked as a surveyor, which means he measured land. Later, he became part-owner of a general store in Newfane. He grew his businesses a lot. He started importing (bringing in) and exporting (sending out) goods from Brattleboro. He used the Connecticut River for this trade. He was even one of the owners of the very first flat-bottomed boat that traveled on that river!

John Holbrook had a son named Frederick Holbrook. Frederick grew up to become a very important person too. He became the 27th governor of Vermont!
