The Dead End Glacier is a large river of ice located on the island of South Georgia. This amazing glacier flows towards the east from the southern part of the Salvesen Range, a group of mountains. It eventually joins another glacier called the Salomon Glacier on its western side.

What is Dead End Glacier?

A glacier is like a very slow-moving river made of ice. The Dead End Glacier is one of these icy rivers. It's found on South Georgia, which is a remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, known for its cold weather and stunning natural beauty.

Where is Dead End Glacier Located?

The Dead End Glacier is situated on the island of South Georgia. It starts in the Salvesen Range, which is a mountain range on the island. From there, it flows eastward until it meets the Salomon Glacier. You can find its exact location using its coordinates: 54°47′S 35°56′W / 54.783°S 35.933°W / -54.783; -35.933.

How Did Dead End Glacier Get its Name?

This glacier was carefully mapped and studied between 1951 and 1957 by a group called the South Georgia Survey. The name "Dead End Glacier" was given by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee. They chose this name because people using sleds couldn't find a way to travel from the top of this glacier to the northern shore of Drygalski Fjord. It was literally a "dead end" for their sledging routes!
