The Dead River is a short river located in Lake County, Florida, United States. It forms a natural boundary between the cities of Tavares and Leesburg. The river earned its name because its water moves very slowly, almost as if it has no current at all.

About the Dead River
The Dead River connects two larger bodies of water: Lake Eustis and Lake Harris. This connection is important for the local ecosystem and for boats traveling between the lakes.
Why is it called "Dead"?
Studies have shown just how still the water in the Dead River can be. If you were to leave a small boat, like a john boat, on the river overnight, it would barely move. It might drift less than five feet from where you left it! This lack of movement is why people started calling it the "Dead River."
Crossing the River
There is only one main road that crosses the Dead River. This road is U.S. Highway 441/SR 44. It crosses the river near where the Dead River flows into Lake Eustis.
What's on the River?
You can find a couple of businesses right on the banks of the Dead River. One popular spot is Hurricanes Dockside Grill. Across U.S. Highway 441 from Hurricanes, there's another place called Palm Gardens, which is a fish camp and restaurant.
Wildlife and Safety
Like many waterways in Florida, the Dead River is home to various wildlife, including alligators. It's always important to be aware of your surroundings and stay safe when you are near the water. Remember that alligators are wild animals and should be given plenty of space.
