History of Deale

Early Inhabitants and European Settlers

People have lived in the Deale area for a very long time. Archaeologists have found signs of early tribes from as far back as 8,000 B.C. These were nomadic groups, meaning they moved around. A larger, more permanent camp was found nearby, dating to 2,000 B.C. The Deale area was important hunting land for the Susquehannock people. It was also within the territory claimed by the Piscataway people.

European settlers first arrived in Anne Arundel County around 1649. They came from southeast Virginia. They were trying to escape religious persecution during the English Civil War. By 1655, they settled in the Herring Creek area, which includes present-day Deale. Many of these settlers had become Quakers.

From Farms to Fishing Village

For many years, the land was mainly used for farming. This changed around 1870. That's when watermen (people who make a living from the water) began to settle near the oyster beds in Herring Bay. These watermen came from Long Island and Maryland's Eastern Shore.

By 1920, some farms started to become summer communities. Businesses in Deale began to grow. They started building, repairing, and renting boats to summer tourists. They also built restaurants and shops to serve the visitors. By 1960, some watermen became charter fishing captains. They offered fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay to people visiting from Baltimore and Washington D.C.
