Dean Arthur Amadon (born June 5, 1912 – died January 12, 2003) was an American ornithologist. An ornithologist is a scientist who studies birds. Dean Amadon was especially known for his knowledge about birds of prey, like eagles and hawks.

Who Was Dean Amadon?
Dean Amadon was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents were Arthur and Mary Amadon. From a young age, he was interested in the natural world.
Early Life and Education
Dean Amadon went to Hobart College. He earned his first degree there in 1934. Later, he continued his studies at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1947.
A Life with Birds
In 1937, Dean Amadon began working at the American Museum of Natural History. This famous museum is located in New York City. He worked in the Department of Ornithology. From 1957 to 1973, he was the Chairman of this department. This meant he led the team that studied birds at the museum.
Dean Amadon was a member of several important science groups. He joined the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also president of the American Ornithologists' Union from 1964 to 1966. This union is a major group for bird scientists. He was also part of the Linnaean Society of New York. In 1959, he became a member of The Explorers Club. This club is for people who have explored the world.
