In 2007, Dean moved to Broome for a fresh start. He began working as a builder's helper. One day, he heard about a film being made nearby. He went to offer his help as a crew member. He started by moving equipment. He shared his own life story with the filmmakers. This led to him getting the main role in the movie Mad Bastards. The character he played, TJ, was a lot like him. Dean later became a mentor. He helped people make positive changes in their lives. This started after a coordinator for Aboriginal services saw him in Mad Bastards. Dean visited places to talk about making good choices.
Dean's Acting Career
In the film Mad Bastards, Dean Daley-Jones plays TJ. TJ is the father of a boy who has faced challenges. The boy's grandfather, played by Greg Tait, is a local policeman. He sends the boy to a special camp. TJ and the grandfather eventually have a big disagreement. Dean was interviewed by Onya Magazine about his work in this film.
He also had a role in the 2011 film, Toomelah. This movie was directed by Ivan Sen. In Toomelah, Dean plays Bruce, a leader of a group. In the same year, he wrote and directed a short documentary. It was called "Walk Tall, Stand Strong." This was part of the Deadly Yarns series.
In the TV show Redfern Now, Dean played Indigo. Indigo is an Aboriginal man in his late 30s. He is released from a difficult situation. He then has to deal with personal challenges.
In 2018, he appeared in the film Flotsam Jetsam. Banjo Fitzsimon directed this movie. Other actors in it included Michael Gupta and Geraldine Hakewill.
