The Investigation into Mark Duggan's Death
An inquest into Duggan's death started on September 16, 2013. An inquest is a legal investigation. It aims to find out how someone died. It does not decide if someone is guilty of a crime.
On January 8, 2014, a jury made a decision. They decided that Duggan's death was a lawful killing. This means the police officer acted within the law. The officer told the jury he believed Duggan was holding a gun. He thought Duggan was going to shoot it.
However, a witness known as Witness B said something different. He said Duggan was not holding a gun. He claimed Duggan was holding a mobile phone. A gun was found in a sock 10–14 feet away. This gun and sock did not have Duggan's DNA on them. Duggan's family were very upset by the jury's decision.
