Deb Vanasse (born September 12, 1957) is an American writer. She has written more than a dozen books. Many of her stories are set in Alaska.

Deb Vanasse writes books for both children and adults. Her books for young readers include six picture books and two novels for young adults. She also co-wrote No Returns with fellow young adult novelist Gail Giles. This book is the first in a planned series called the Battleband Saga. For adults, she has written Cold Spell and travel guides about Alaska.

Deb Vanasse was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. She studied at Bemidji State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Later, she received a Master of Humanities degree from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Her Books for Young Readers

Deb Vanasse's first novel for young adults was A Distant Enemy. It was chosen as a Junior Literary Guild selection. Her second novel, Out of the Wilderness, was also featured in "Best Books for Young Teen Readers."

She has written several picture books, including:

  • Under Alaska's Midnight Sun (illustrated by Jeremiah Tramell)
  • Alaska Animal Babies (with photographs by Gavriel Jecan)
  • Totem Tale (illustrated by Erik Brooks)
  • Amazing Alaska (illustrated by Karen E. Lewis)

One of her books, Lucy's Dance, is set in a Yup'ik village. It even has a special edition in the Yup'ik language.

Stories Inspired by Real Life

Black Wolf of the Glacier is another picture book by Deb Vanasse. It was illustrated by Nancy Slagle. This story is based on the true tale of Romeo. Romeo was a famous wolf who lived near the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.

Deb Vanasse also writes for adults. Her book Cold Spell is a work of fiction. She also helped start the 49 Alaska Writing Center with another writer, Andromeda Romano-Lax.

Today, Deb Vanasse lives in Eagle River, Alaska. She lives there with her husband and their dog.
