About Deborah Alcock

Early Life and Family

Deborah Alcock was born in Kilkenny, a city in Ireland. Her father was named John Alcock, and her mother was Jane. Her father later became an important church leader called the Archdeacon of Waterford.

When Deborah was about 15 years old, in 1851, she was living on the Isle of Man with her parents. She also lived with her aunt, Sally McKenny, and two cousins, Deborah Barllie and Barbara Gose. They had two servants helping them at home.

Reading and Writing

As a child, Deborah enjoyed reading stories about good children and missionaries. Missionaries are people who travel to share their religious beliefs.

However, her father did not want her to read many popular novels of the time. He banned books by famous authors like Elizabeth Gaskell and Charlotte Brontë. But he did allow her to read novels by Sir Walter Scott. These stories greatly influenced her own writing style and the types of themes she chose for her books.

Adult Life and Health

Deborah Alcock never married. She lived with her father for many years. After he passed away, she wrote a book about him called Walking with God: A Memoir of the Venerable John Alcock.

She often moved around. In 1891, she was visiting a friend in London. By 1901, she was living in Bournemouth, Dorset, with her cousin Mary Smith. A magazine called The Sunday at Home interviewed her in 1900. They learned that she often felt unwell but was always excited about her writing.

Later in her life, around 1911, Deborah moved to Sussex. She lived for a while in St Leonards with another writer, Elizabeth Boyd Bayly. Deborah Alcock died at her home in Hastings in 1913. She left a good amount of money in her will. After her death, Elizabeth Boyd Bayly wrote a book about Deborah's life in 1914.
