Early Life and Cooking Journey
Deborah grew up in Davis, California. She studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After college, she cooked at a famous restaurant called Chez Panisse. She also spent many years studying at the San Francisco Zen Center.
In 1979, she became the first chef at Greens Restaurant in San Francisco. This restaurant became very famous for its vegetarian food. Later, she cooked for a year in Rome, Italy.

Deborah lives in New Mexico with her husband, artist Patrick McFarlin. They even wrote a book together called What We Eat When We Eat Alone. She also helped start Café Escalara in Santa Fe.
