Early Life and Cooking Journey

Deborah Madison grew up in Davis, California. She studied sociology and city planning at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After college, she started her cooking career at a famous restaurant called Chez Panisse. She also spent many years learning at the San Francisco Zen Center.

In 1979, Deborah became the first chef at Greens Restaurant in San Francisco. This restaurant became very popular for its delicious vegetarian food. Later, she cooked for a year at the American Academy in Rome, Italy, which helped her learn even more about different foods and cooking styles.
