Deep Creek Dam facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Deep Creek Dam is a large wall made of earth and rock in Maryland, about 8 miles north of Oakland. It was finished in 1925. This dam holds back water from a small river that flows into the Youghiogheny River. When the dam was built, it created the large and popular Deep Creek Lake.

How the Dam Works

The Deep Creek Dam isn't just for holding water. It also has a special power plant. This plant uses two big machines called water turbines. These turbines spin when water flows through them, which helps create electricity. This way of making power is called hydroelectricity. The power plant started working in 1928 and can make 20 megawatts of electricity.

Managing the Dam and Lake

For a long time, a group called the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) oversaw the dam. But since 1994, the state of Maryland has been in charge. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources works with the dam operators. They make sure the dam helps both nature and people.

Helping Nature

The dam helps control the water that flows into the Youghiogheny River. This is important for fish, especially trout. By controlling the water flow, the dam helps keep the river's temperature just right. It also makes sure there's enough oxygen in the water. These things help the fish stay healthy and grow.

Fun on the River

The dam also helps people have fun! It releases water into the Upper Youghiogheny River at certain times. This creates exciting "whitewater" conditions. People love to go kayaking, canoeing, and commercial rafting on these fast-moving waters. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors.
