The Deep River Freight Station is an old train building in Deep River, Connecticut. It was built in 1915 by a big train company called the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. This station is special because it's one of only two train stations from the early 1900s still standing on the old Connecticut Valley Railroad line.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 21, 1994. Today, it is part of the Valley Railroad, which is a fun heritage steam railroad.

What is the Deep River Freight Station?

The Deep River Freight Station is located in eastern Deep River. It sits between River Street and the old train tracks. These tracks run right next to the Connecticut River.

Building Design and Size

The station is a single-story building made of wood. It is about 25 feet wide and 40 feet long. The building rests on strong brownstone blocks. These blocks support large wooden beams.

The station has special loading docks on its north and south sides. These docks were used for loading and unloading goods. The roof is not very steep and has wide edges. These edges are held up by big brackets.

History of the Deep River Freight Station

The station was built around 1915 by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. This was part of a plan to improve train systems.

Serving Passengers and Freight

When it was first built, the station helped both people and goods. Passengers would get on and off trains here. Freight, which means goods or cargo, was also loaded and unloaded.

Changes Over Time

Passenger train service on this line stopped in 1933. More and more people started using cars instead of trains. Freight service continued for many years. It finally ended in 1961. This happened when the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad went out of business.

Becoming a Heritage Railroad

In 1971, a part of the old Connecticut Valley Railroad tracks was brought back to life. It became a heritage railroad. This means old trains, often steam trains, run on the tracks for fun and history. The Deep River Freight Station is now an important part of this historic train line.
