A Multi layer neural network.

Deep learning is a special type of machine learning. It uses computer programs that learn from lots of data, much like how our brains learn. It's often used with something called neural networks, which are computer systems inspired by the human brain.

Imagine you want a computer to recognize a cat in a picture. With deep learning, you show it thousands of pictures of cats and non-cats. The computer then learns to spot the patterns that make something a cat all by itself!

Deep learning models can learn in different ways:

  • Supervised learning: This is like having a teacher. You give the computer data and tell it the correct answers. For example, "This picture is a cat," or "This picture is a dog."
  • Unsupervised learning: Here, the computer learns on its own without any labels. It tries to find hidden patterns or groups in the data.
  • Semi-supervised learning: This is a mix of both. The computer gets some labeled data and some unlabeled data, helping it learn more efficiently.

What is Deep Learning?

Deep learning models are built with many layers, like an onion. Each layer helps the computer understand different parts of the information. For example, when looking at a picture, one layer might recognize edges, another might find shapes, and a higher layer might identify objects like faces or cars.

How it Works

In a deep learning system, information goes through several "hidden layers" between the starting point (input) and the final answer (output). Each layer processes the information and passes it on to the next, becoming more detailed and abstract as it goes.

Think of it like this:

  • The first layer might just see basic lines and colors in an image.
  • The next layer combines these lines to see shapes like circles or squares.
  • Even higher layers combine shapes to recognize complex things like a human face or a car.

This multi-layered approach helps computers tackle tasks that are easy for humans but hard for machines. These tasks include recognizing speech, understanding images, or reading handwriting.

Inspired by the Brain

Deep learning models are inspired by how our nervous systems process information. They try to mimic the way brain cells (neurons) connect and send signals to each other. However, it's important to remember that deep learning models are still very different from real brains. They don't work exactly like a human brain, but they use some similar ideas to learn and solve problems.
