Deering was once a separate city in Maine. It was located in Cumberland County, Maine. Today, Deering is no longer a city on its own. It became part of Portland in 1899. This means Portland grew bigger by adding Deering.
Deering's Early Days
Before 1871, Deering was not a separate place. It was part of a larger area called Saccarappa. This area also included what is now Westbrook.
In 1871, the people of Saccarappa decided to split. They formed two new towns. One was Westbrook, and the other was Deering. This change happened smoothly, with little disagreement.
Becoming a Town
When Deering became a town in 1871, it started to grow. The government counted its residents in 1880. The 1880 United States Census showed that 4,324 people lived in the new town of Deering. This was a good start for the community.
From Town to City
As Deering grew, it became more important. In 1892, Deering changed its status. It was officially "incorporated" as a city. This meant it had its own city government. It could make more decisions for itself.
Joining Portland
Deering's time as an independent city was short. In 1899, a big change happened. Deering was "annexed" by Portland. This means Portland took over Deering. Deering stopped being a separate city.
Today, the area that was once Deering is now the northern part of Portland. It's like a neighborhood within the larger city. This annexation helped Portland grow. It also changed the history of Deering forever.
