Deidamia or Deidameia was a Greek princess from the ancient kingdom of Epirus. She was the daughter of Pyrrhus II of Epirus, who was a king of Epirus. Deidamia was also known by another name, Laodamia.

After her father and her uncle, Ptolemy of Epirus, passed away, Deidamia became the last living member of the royal Aeacid family in Epirus. This family had ruled Epirus for a long time. She had a sister named Nereis of Epirus, who married Gelo of Syracuse.

A Time of Trouble

During Deidamia's time, there was a rebellion in Epirus. A rebellion is when people rise up against their rulers. Her sister, Nereis, sent 800 Gaulish mercenaries to help Deidamia. Mercenaries are soldiers who fight for money.

Some of the local people, called the Molossians, supported Deidamia. With the help of these hired soldiers, she was able to take control of a city called Ambracia for a short time.

Seeking Peace

The people of Epirus eventually asked for peace. Deidamia agreed to their request, but only if they recognized her rights as the rightful ruler. She also wanted them to honor her ancestors, who were kings and queens before her.

However, some people in Epirus were still against her. They tried to harm her. Deidamia sought safety in the temple of Artemis, a goddess. Sadly, she was killed inside the temple by a man named Milon.

When Did This Happen?

We don't know the exact date when Deidamia died. But historians believe it happened around 233 BC. This was during the time when Demetrius II of Macedon was king of Macedonia, which was between 239 BC and 229 BC.
