Deirdre Madden was born in a place called Toome in County Antrim. She went to school at St Mary's Grammar School in Magherafelt. After that, she studied at Trinity College, Dublin and then at the University of East Anglia.
In 1994, Deirdre was a special writer at University College Cork. This means she worked and taught there for a while. Later, in 1997, she was a writer fellow at Trinity College, Dublin.
