Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is a special park in California, USA. It is part of the larger Redwood National and State Parks system. This amazing park is home to giant coast redwoods, which are some of the tallest trees on Earth. About half of the park is covered in these ancient, old-growth forests.
The park also includes about 8 kilometers (5 miles) of wild Pacific coastline. Imagine walking among huge trees and then seeing the ocean! The park was first created in 1925. It grew much bigger in 2002 with the Mill Creek Addition, adding 25,000 acres. Today, the park covers about 31,261 acres (12,651 hectares). In 1983, it became part of the California Coast Ranges International Biosphere Reserve. This means it's recognized worldwide for its important natural environment.
Protecting the Park
Why the Park Almost Closed
Sometimes, governments need to save money. In January 2008, the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, suggested closing 48 state parks. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park was on this list. This idea was part of a plan to reduce the state's budget problems.
Public Support and New Plans
Many people were upset about the idea of closing the parks. They spoke out and protested. Because of this strong public reaction, the plan to close the parks was stopped.
However, in May 2011, the park was again one of 70 state parks that faced possible closure. To help keep it open, the National Park Service stepped in. In October 2011, they agreed to help manage Del Norte Coast Redwoods for one year. This helped make sure the park stayed open for everyone to enjoy.
