Delbert Lee "Cigar" Daisey (born March 6, 1928 – died April 19, 2017) was a famous American wood carver. He was especially known for making "decoy" ducks. Decoys are realistic models of birds used to attract real birds, often for hunting.

Cigar Daisey was born in Chincoteague, Virginia. This is a small island town in Virginia, U.S. He even lived at the Refuge Waterfowl Museum later in his life. His carvings were not just beautiful art. They also worked very well for their purpose in hunting.

Meet Cigar Daisey: A Master Carver

Cigar Daisey was a true artist with wood. He carved many different types of ducks. These included black ducks, mallards, and redheads. He also carved ruddys and red-breasted mergansers. He often made them in pairs: a male (called a drake) and a female (called a hen).

His Amazing Duck Carvings

Cigar Daisey carved about 1,900 ducks in his lifetime. He mostly used cork or wood for his creations. He made his very first duck carving in 1940. He was only 12 years old at the time! He carved it from balsa wood in his father's wood shop.

How He Got His Famous Nickname

Cigar Daisey earned his nickname "Cigar" in 1945. He would leave cigar butts behind to tease game wardens. Game wardens are like park rangers who protect wildlife. At that time, he was hunting ducks in a way that wasn't allowed on Assateague Island. Even though he started this way, he later became a strong supporter of protecting nature. He was an avid conservationist. This means he worked to protect wildlife and natural places.

His Legacy and Passing

Cigar Daisey's amazing works are even in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. This is a very famous museum in the United States. He passed away on April 19, 2017, in Chincoteague, Virginia. He was 89 years old. His carvings continue to be admired by many people.
