Wardell Stephen "Dell" Curry Sr. (born June 25, 1964) is a former American professional basketball player. He is famous for his amazing shooting skills, especially from the three-point line. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 16 years, from 1986 to 2002.

Curry is best known for his time with the Charlotte Hornets. He retired as their all-time leader in points (9,839) and three-point shots made (929). Today, he works as a TV commentator for the Hornets. He is also the father of two famous NBA players, Stephen Curry and Seth Curry.

Early Life and High School

Dell Curry was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and grew up in the small town of Grottoes. He loved basketball from a young age. He practiced shooting every day in his coach's barn.

At Fort Defiance High School, he became the school's all-time leading scorer. In 1982, he was named a McDonald's All-American, an honor given to the best high school players in the country. Curry was also a talented baseball player and won state championships in both sports. The Texas Rangers even drafted him to play professional baseball, but he chose to focus on basketball.

College Basketball Career

Curry played college basketball for four years at Virginia Tech. He was a star player for the team, known as the Hokies. During his time there, the team played in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) twice and the NCAA Tournament twice.

In his final year, 1986, he was named the Player of the Year in the Metro Conference. Interestingly, the three-point line was not yet a part of NCAA basketball. This meant his famous long-range shots only counted for two points.

Curry also played baseball in college. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1985 but decided to stick with basketball. He finished his college career as the second-highest scorer in Virginia Tech history with 2,389 points.

NBA Career

Starting in the League

In the 1986 NBA draft, Dell Curry was chosen by the Utah Jazz. He played one season with them before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. After one year in Cleveland, he was selected by a brand-new team, the Charlotte Hornets, in the 1988 NBA expansion draft.

Starring for the Charlotte Hornets

Curry played for the Charlotte Hornets for 10 seasons. He became a fan favorite and one of the best shooters in the league. He was known for coming off the bench and scoring points quickly, a role often called a "sixth man."

His excellent performance earned him the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for the 1993–94 season. By the time he left the Hornets in 1998, he was the team's all-time leader in several categories, including points and three-pointers.

Final Years in the NBA

After leaving Charlotte, Curry played one season for the Milwaukee Bucks. He then spent his final three seasons with the Toronto Raptors before retiring in 2002. Over his 16-year career, he scored a total of 12,670 points.

Life After Basketball

After retiring as a player, Curry stayed involved with the sport. In 2004, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, a great honor for athletes from his home state.

In 2009, he began a new career as a color commentator for the Charlotte Hornets' TV broadcasts. Fans enjoy hearing his expert opinions during games.

Personal Life and Family

Curry married his college sweetheart, Sonya, in 1988. They have three children: Stephen, Seth, and Sydel. Both of his sons followed in his footsteps and became professional basketball players.

In 1998, Curry started the Dell Curry Foundation. This charity helps young people in Charlotte, North Carolina, by providing educational support and guidance.

Dell and Sonya were married for 33 years before they divorced in 2021.
