This series features the same main characters from the first Deltora Quest series. These include:
- Lief: The young King of Deltora. He is brave and determined to protect his people.
- Barda: Lief's loyal bodyguard and friend. He is strong and wise.

The Quest to Save Deltora
In Deltora Quest 2, King Lief faces a new challenge. Even though he defeated the Shadow Lord in the first series, Deltora is still in danger. The Shadow Lord has taken thousands of Deltorans as slaves. They are held captive in a dark place called the Shadowlands.
Lief and his friends must find and put together three pieces of a magical item. This item is called the Pirran Pipe. It is the only thing the Shadow Lord truly fears. By reuniting the Pipe, they hope to save their people.
The Story of the Pirran Pipe
Lief learns about the Pirran Pipe from old history books. The Shadowlands used to be a land called Pirra. It was protected by the Pipe's magical music. But when the Piper died, three people wanted to be the new Piper. The evil Shadow Lord tricked them. He made them divide the Pipe into three pieces.
With the Pipe broken, Pirra lost its protection. The Shadow Lord was able to invade. The people of Pirra fled underground. They split into three tribes: the Plumes, Auron, and Keras. Each tribe kept one piece of the broken Pipe.
Book 1: Cavern of the Fear
The adventure begins when King Lief leaves Deltora. He pretends to look for a bride. While he is away, Jasmine discovers a magic crystal. It shows her little sister, Faith, trapped in the Shadowlands.
Lief learns about the Pirran Pipe. He finds out it is the Shadow Lord's only weakness. Soon, Lief and Barda discover that Jasmine has gone to the Shadowlands. She hopes to rescue her sister. Lief and Barda follow her.
They find a secret underground world. They are captured by the Plumes tribe. The Plumes are also holding Jasmine captive. The Plumes eventually trust them. They free Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. The friends must fight a giant squid-like creature called the Fear. This creature threatens to flood the island.
During the fight, Jasmine receives a special talisman. It turns out to be the first piece of the Pirran Pipe!
Book 2: The Isle of Illusion
Next, the friends travel to the island of Auron. They find it deserted. The Auron people now live on rafts. Other members of the tribe live inside a magic dome. This dome shows an illusion of their old home.
Only one old Piper, Auris, remains inside the dome. He keeps the illusion going. The friends enter the dome. Their presence causes the illusion to break. Giant spiders called Arach then attack. The spiders kill Auris.
With Auris gone, the dome collapses. The friends retrieve the second part of the Pipe. They also learn a dark secret about the Shadow Lord. He is using dark magic to control the minds of former captives. This explains why some people in Deltora have been acting strangely.
Book 3: The Shadowlands
The three companions reach the island of Keras. They receive the final piece of the Pirran Pipe. King Lief leaves his special Belt of Deltora with the Piper of Keras for safekeeping. The Piper's son, Emlis, joins Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. They journey into the Shadowlands.
They meet a group of freedom fighters led by Claw. Together, they plan to surprise the Shadow Lord. They want to reach the place where the slaves are held. They find the slaves at the Shadow Arena.
Just as the Shadow Lord is about to control the slaves' minds, Jasmine reaches Faith. But she discovers that 'Faith' was just an illusion. It was a trick to lure Jasmine and Lief into the Shadowlands.
Emlis, the Piper's son, begins to play the Pirran Pipe. Its music has a powerful effect. Lief, Barda, Jasmine, Claw, Emlis, and all the slaves are instantly transported back to the secret sea. The Pirran tribes can move people between the surface and their caves. They heard the Pipe's music and helped them escape.
The Plume, Auron, and Keras peoples reunite. The freed slaves return home to Deltora. Lief returns to Deltora. He reveals a secret about the royal family. Marilen, who Lief pretended to marry, is actually a distant relative of Adin, the first King of Deltora. Lief had left the real Belt of Deltora with her. This meant if anything happened to him, Marilen would become Queen. The series ends with a hint of romance between Lief and Jasmine.
