Sir Denis William Boyd (born March 6, 1891 – died January 21, 1965) was a very important officer in the Royal Navy. He was an Admiral. During his career, he held big jobs like Fifth Sea Lord and Commander-in-Chief of the Far East Fleet. He was known for his leadership during both World War I and World War II.

Starting His Career
Denis Boyd joined the Royal Navy in 1906 when he was just 15 years old. He started as a midshipman, which is a junior officer. By 1910, he became a full officer.
During World War I, he served as a Torpedo Officer on HMS Fearless. Torpedoes are underwater weapons. After the war, in 1922, he went on an amazing trip around the world. He sailed on the famous battleship HMS Hood.
When he returned in 1923, he continued his naval career. From 1926, he worked with the Royal Australian Navy. In 1928, he became the main Torpedo Officer for the Mediterranean Fleet. He was promoted to Captain in 1931.
Captain Boyd briefly commanded the destroyer HMS Valentine in 1932. He then worked in the naval staff, helping to plan strategies. In 1934, he became the Director of the Tactical Division.
In 1936, he took command of HMS Hardy. He also led the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla based in Malta. This job included patrolling near Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Before World War II began, he was in charge of HMS Vernon, a school for torpedo training.
World War II Hero
When World War II started, Boyd became the captain of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious in 1940. Aircraft carriers are huge ships that carry many airplanes. He played a key role in the Battle of Taranto, where British planes attacked Italian ships.
In August 1941, he was promoted to Rear Admiral. He then commanded all aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1942, he moved to the Eastern Fleet. There, he continued to lead aircraft carriers, with HMS Indomitable as his main ship.
A very important role came in 1943 when he was appointed Fifth Sea Lord. This job meant he was in charge of naval air equipment. He was promoted again to Vice Admiral in August 1944. In January 1945, he became Admiral (Air) at the Royal Navy Air Station at Lee-on-Solent.
After the War
After World War II ended, Sir Denis Boyd continued his service. In 1946, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the Far East Fleet. This was a very high-ranking position. He was promoted to full Admiral in 1948. He officially retired from the Royal Navy in 1949.
Later Life and Legacy
After retiring from the Navy, Admiral Boyd took on a new role. He became the Principal of Ashridge College. This college teaches business and leadership skills. Sir Denis Boyd passed away on January 21, 1965, at the age of 73. He is remembered for his long and distinguished service in the Royal Navy.
