Early Life and Art Studies

Denise Broadley was born on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, England. She loved art from a young age. From 1932 to 1935, she studied at the Ipswich School of Art. Later, she went to the Westminster School of Art in London. This was between 1936 and 1939. She also spent time at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. This famous art school was run by an artist named Cedric Morris. Denise even shared her memories of this school in a book.

Painting and Travel

In the 1930s, Denise Broadley traveled around Europe. She went with another artist, Lucy Harwood. They visited cities like Bruges, Paris, Dieppe, and places in Brittany. While traveling, Denise painted many street scenes. These paintings captured the lively atmosphere of the cities.

Art During and After the War

During World War II, Denise helped her country. She volunteered with the Women's Land Army. This group helped with farming while many men were away fighting. After the war, Denise worked as a teacher for a while. She then joined a religious community. During this time, she did not paint much. She only painted a little when she visited Australia.
