Denise Georgette Gordy was born in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. Her parents were George and Rosemary Gordy. She has several brothers and sisters. Her uncle is Berry Gordy, who started the very famous Motown music company. Her aunt is Anna Gordy Gaye.

Denise Gordy began her acting career in 1972. One of her first roles was as a dancer in the movie Lady Sings the Blues. In 1974, she appeared in the film Black Fist. She also sang a song called "Let's Do It Again" for the soundtrack of that movie. Denise Gordy stopped acting after her role in the movie Toy Soldiers in 1991.
