Dennis Gail Peters (born April 17, 1937 – died April 13, 2020) was an American chemist. He was an expert in electrochemistry, which is a branch of chemistry that studies how electricity and chemical reactions are connected. He became a special professor at Indiana University in 1975.
Professor Peters led his own research team at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana for many years. His work focused on how certain chemical compounds react with electricity. He wrote or helped write over 210 scientific papers and 5 textbooks about analytical chemistry.
Early Life and Education
Dennis Peters was born on April 17, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He studied chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 with high honors.
After that, he went to Harvard University to get his PhD in analytical chemistry. He finished his PhD in 1962. His main teacher there was James J. Lingane. After finishing his studies, Peters began working at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
Career as a Chemist
From 1969 to 1971, Professor Peters helped new graduate students in the chemistry department. He even helped bring in the largest group of new students the department had ever seen.
His research looked at how different organic compounds react when electricity is passed through them. He also studied how to use electricity to create new chemical substances. Professor Peters was still teaching his classes right up until he became ill in 2020.
His Legacy
Dennis Peters passed away on April 13, 2020, just a few days before his 83rd birthday. He became ill while recovering in a hospital in Bloomington.
Many people remembered Professor Peters for his strong, clear voice that could fill a lecture hall. He was a dedicated teacher and researcher.
Awards and Honors
Professor Peters received many awards for his teaching and research. Here are some of them:
- 1990: American Chemical Society J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Teaching.
- 2002: Electrochemical Society Henry B. Linford Award for Distinguished Teaching.
- 2006: W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service from Indiana University Bloomington.
- 2007: He was chosen as a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society.
