Dennis Seidenberg's Hockey Journey
Dennis Seidenberg started playing ice hockey when he was young. He even played in big youth tournaments in Quebec, Canada, in 1994 and 1995.
Starting with the Philadelphia Flyers
Dennis was chosen by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Before joining the NHL, he played for three years with Adler Mannheim in Germany's top league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). In 2002, he signed with the Flyers.
For the next two seasons, Dennis played for both the Flyers in the NHL and their minor league team, the Philadelphia Phantoms, in the American Hockey League (AHL). During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he played the whole season with the Phantoms. That year, his team won the Calder Cup, which is a championship trophy for the AHL.
Moving to Other Teams
After the lockout, Dennis was traded a couple of times. In January 2006, he moved to the Phoenix Coyotes. The next year, in January 2007, the Coyotes traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes.
In September 2009, Dennis signed a one-year contract to play for the Florida Panthers.
Winning the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins
On March 3, 2010, Dennis Seidenberg and another player, Matt Bartkowski, were traded to the Boston Bruins. In June 2010, the Bruins signed Dennis to a new four-year contract.
The 2010–11 season was a great one for Dennis. He scored a career-high 32 points during the regular season. Then, in the playoffs, he scored 11 points, helping the Bruins win the Stanley Cup! Dennis played incredibly well during those playoffs. He became only the second German-born player to win the Stanley Cup, following Uwe Krupp, who was his favorite player growing up.
In December 2013, Dennis suffered a serious knee injury during a game. This injury meant he couldn't play for the rest of that season and needed surgery.
In 2016, he was chosen to play for Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. After the 2015–16 season, Dennis's seven years with the Bruins came to an end when his contract was bought out.
Time with the New York Islanders and Retirement
In September 2016, Dennis signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders. He signed another one-year deal with them in April 2017.
Dennis officially announced his retirement from professional hockey on October 23, 2019.
