History of Denton
How Denton Started
Denton got its name from a county in Missouri. The first postmaster, who was in charge of the mail, used to live there. A post office opened in Denton way back in 1888.
The town grew when the railroad tracks were built to this spot. This made it easier for people and goods to travel to and from Denton.
The West Wind Fire
In December 2021, a very fast-moving wildfire called the West Wind Fire swept through Denton. It was a difficult time for the town.
Twelve families lost their homes in the fire. Many other buildings were also damaged or destroyed. These included garages, barns, and tall grain elevators.
Luckily, everyone in Denton was evacuated just minutes before the fire arrived. This meant that no one was seriously hurt. The fire burned a huge area of land, about 10,000 acres (which is about 40 square kilometers).

- Don Koehler: He was one of the few people ever recorded to grow taller than eight feet!
- James A. Shelton: He was a Navy ensign (a type of officer). He bravely served during the Battle of Midway in World War II and received a special award called the Navy Cross after he passed away.
