Deon T. Tedder is an American lawyer and politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He also helps lead the South Carolina chapter of Future Caucus.

Deon Tedder's Political Journey

Deon Tedder is a member of the South Carolina Senate. He represents District 42. In the Senate, he works on several important groups called committees. These include the Judiciary Committee and the Medical Affairs Committee.

Becoming a State Representative in 2020

In June 2020, Tedder ran for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He won against other candidates in the Democratic Primary elections. A primary election is when people from the same political party choose who they want to represent them.

After the primary, he won the main election against Rodney Travis. This made him a member of the House of Representatives for District 109. He served in this role until January 2024.

While in the House, Tedder worked on the Education and Public Works Committee. He also helped manage the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus as its Treasurer. He supported a bill to help historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). He also supported using clean energy and electric vehicle technology.

Running for the State Senate in 2023

On March 12, 2023, Tedder announced he would run for the South Carolina Senate. He wanted to represent District 42. This seat became open when the previous senator, Marlon Kimpson, took a new job.

Many people and groups supported Tedder in his race. This included Conservation Voters of South Carolina. The former Senator for District 42, Marlon Kimpson, also supported him.

The Democratic primary election for this Senate seat happened on September 5. Tedder was one of the candidates. He then faced another candidate, Wendell Gilliard, in a runoff election. A runoff election happens when no one wins enough votes in the first primary.

On September 19, Tedder won the runoff election by a very small number of votes. This led to a recount, which means they counted the votes again. On September 21, Tedder was officially declared the winner.

Tedder then won the special election on November 7, 2023. He won against Rosa Kay, a Republican candidate. At that time, he became the youngest member of the South Carolina Senate.

Re-election to the State Senate in 2024

In March 2024, Tedder decided to run for re-election to his Senate seat. He won the Democratic Primary against Kim Greene. After that, he ran unopposed in the general election. This means no one else ran against him, so he kept his Senate seat.
