Deptford was a special area in South London that used to have its own representative in the UK Parliament. This representative was called a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone who is chosen by people in an area (called a constituency) to speak for them in the government.
The Deptford constituency was created for the general election in 1885. It was later removed in February 1974. After that, most of the area became part of a new constituency called Lewisham Deptford.

What is a Constituency?
A constituency is like a special zone or area. In the UK, people living in each constituency vote for one person to be their MP. This MP then goes to the House of Commons in Parliament to represent the people from their area.
Deptford's Boundaries
The boundaries of the Deptford constituency changed a couple of times:
- 1885–1918: The area included the parish of St Paul, Deptford, and also a place called Hatcham.
- 1918–1974: The area became the entire Metropolitan Borough of Deptford. This means the whole local government area of Deptford was part of the constituency.
