History of Deptford Mall
How the Mall Started
The Deptford Mall first opened its doors in August 1975. When it opened, it had three main department stores. These were Sears, Bamberger's, and Wanamaker's. It also had more than 150 other smaller shops.
Changes to Stores Over Time
Over the years, some of the main stores changed their names. In 1986, Bamberger's became Macy's. Then, in 1995, the Wanamaker's store changed to Hecht's. A year later, in 1996, Hecht's became Strawbridge's.
In 2000, construction began for a new main store. This was a JCPenney store, which opened on August 1, 2001. It became the mall's fourth big anchor store. In 2006, the Strawbridge's store closed down. It was replaced by Boscov's, which is still there today.
Mall Ownership and Upgrades
In January 2007, a company called Macerich bought the Deptford Mall. They paid $241 million for it. Later, in October 2015, Macerich sold a part of the mall (49 percent) to another company called Heitman.
Around November 2012, the mall finished a big renovation project. They changed how people moved between floors. The old escalators and some stairs were removed. New escalators were added at each end of the mall. A new elevator was also put in the center.
The floors throughout the mall were replaced. The food court got new chairs, booths, and tables. A fun play area for kids was also added in the food court.
Recent Store Changes
In 2015, the Sears store at Deptford Mall became part of a new company called Seritage Growth Properties. However, on October 15, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store would close. It officially closed in January 2019.
The lower part of the old Sears building found a new tenant. Dick's Sporting Goods moved into that space. They opened their new store in September 2020. In 2019, Round One Entertainment announced plans to open. They took over the upper level of the former Sears building. Round One opened on October 30, 2020.
