The Derby Baptist Chapel was a special church building located on St Mary's Gate in Derby, England. It first opened its doors in 1841.

A Look Back at the Chapel's Story

The people who formed this church group first came together on August 21, 1791. They started by holding their worship services in a building on Brook Street from 1802.

As more and more people joined, the group grew to about 500 members. They needed a bigger place to meet. So, in 1841, they bought a large old house on St Mary's Gate. This house was built around 1750 and used to belong to the Osborne family.

They bought the house from William Evans, who was a Member of Parliament. It cost them £4,000. This old house was then changed into the new Baptist Chapel.

The last church services were held there in September 1937. After the chapel closed, its beautiful wrought-iron gates were moved to Derby Cathedral, where they can still be seen today.

The Chapel's Organ

In 1897, a brand new organ was installed in the chapel. It was made by a company called Nicholson. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.

When the chapel closed in 1937, the organ was moved. In 1939, J.H. Adkins moved it to the Baptist Church on Broadway in Derby.
