Early Life and College Basketball
Derrick Brown was born in Oakland, California. He was considered a promising young player in high school. Experts at Rivals.com saw him as a top small forward in 2005.
After high school, Brown played college basketball for the Xavier Musketeers at Xavier University. He played there from 2005 to 2009, improving his skills for a professional career.
Derrick Brown's Pro Career
Derrick Brown had a professional basketball career that lasted from 2009 to 2020. He played for teams in the NBA and in Europe.
Playing for the Charlotte Bobcats (2009–2012)
In 2009, Derrick Brown joined the 2009 NBA draft. He was picked 40th overall by the Charlotte Bobcats. He signed a two-year contract with them in July 2009.
Brown played for the Bobcats until February 2011. He was then traded to the Thunder as part of a deal. Shortly after, the New York Knicks picked him up.
In December 2011, Brown returned to the Charlotte Bobcats. During the 2011–12 NBA season, which was shorter than usual, he played 65 games. He had his best season averages with 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
After that season, the Bobcats offered him a new contract, but they later took it back. This made him a free agent. He briefly signed with the San Antonio Spurs in September 2012 but did not make their final team.
Playing in Europe
Lokomotiv Kuban (2012–2015)
In October 2012, Derrick Brown moved to Russia to play for Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar. He signed a three-year contract with the team. He quickly became an important player.
In 2013, he was named to the All-EuroCup Second Team. The next season, he played in the EuroLeague, which is a top European basketball league. In 23 EuroLeague games, he averaged 13.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Anadolu Efes (2015–2018)
In June 2015, Brown signed a two-year deal with the Turkish club Anadolu Efes. He extended his contract for another two years in 2017.
During his third season with Anadolu Efes (2017–18), his playing time and performance decreased. He averaged 7.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 19 EuroLeague games. After this season, he left the club and did not play professionally for the entire 2018–19 season.
Crvena zvezda (2019–2020)
Derrick Brown returned to basketball in June 2019. He signed a one-year contract with the Serbian club Crvena zvezda. However, he was released from the team in February 2020, which marked the end of his professional career.
