Derry is a small place in Polk County, Oregon, United States. It's called an unincorporated area, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Derry is located about 10 miles west of Salem and just one mile east of Rickreall.

What is Derry?

Derry started out as a stop on a train line. This line was first part of the Southern Pacific railway. Today, it is part of the Portland and Western railway.

How Derry Got Its Name

A local person named James Nesmith gave Derry its name. He named it after Derry, New Hampshire. This was a place where his family used to live.

A Name Change Idea

In 1912, a newspaper called The Oregonian reported something interesting. There was an attempt to change the name of the train station. People wanted to call it Loganberry, but this effort was not successful.

Derry Orchard Station

Just a little to the southeast of Derry, there was another train station. This station was on the Salem, Falls City and Western Railway line. It was called Derry Orchard.
