Desmond William Barrick (born April 28, 1926 – died December 25, 2007) was a talented English cricketer. He played in 301 important matches called first-class games. His career lasted from 1949 to 1960.

Des Barrick's Cricket Career

Des Barrick was born in a place called Fitzwilliam in Yorkshire, England. He was a right-handed batsman, which means he hit the ball with his right hand. He also sometimes bowled, using a style called leg-spin. This means he could make the ball spin in a tricky way.

Starting His Journey

Barrick started playing for Northamptonshire in 1949. He was 23 years old then. In his very first match, he scored 34 runs and was not out. This means he stayed batting until the end of the innings. In his second match, he scored an amazing 147 runs, also not out, against a team from New Zealand. He wasn't out until his third match, after scoring a total of 228 runs!

Big Achievements

Des Barrick was known for being a brave and attacking batsman. He was not very tall, but he hit the ball hard. In 1952, he scored his highest ever score: 211 runs against Essex. In that same game, he and another player, Dennis Brookes, made a huge partnership of 347 runs. This was a great achievement! Because of his excellent play, he received his county cap that year.

He also played for the famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) several times. In 1953-54, he traveled to India with a special team called the Commonwealth XI. There, he scored 867 runs in first-class matches. He even scored 102 runs not out in one of the unofficial Test matches.

Consistent Performer

Barrick was a very consistent player. He scored over 1000 runs in a season seven times! His best year was 1952, when he scored 1570 runs. In 1953, he scored 1407 runs in the County Championship. He also helped set a new record for Northamptonshire. He and Jock Livingston made an unbroken partnership of 299 runs against Sussex.

In his last season, 1960, he often led the Northamptonshire team as captain. This happened when their usual captain, Raman Subba Row, was busy with Test matches or was injured.

Life After First-Class Cricket

After he stopped playing first-class cricket, Barrick continued to play in league cricket. He played for Todmorden in the Lancashire League for two seasons in 1962 and 1963.
