You might know him from TV shows like EastEnders or as a friendly face giving you the weather report on Good Morning Britain and ITV News Central. Des Coleman's Journey in Entertainment
Des Coleman started his career path in a unique way. After leaving school at 16, he worked as a welder. But his true passion was performing!
From Welding to Acting
Des decided to follow his dream of becoming a performer. He studied at the Guildford School of Acting in Surrey. After graduating in 1993, he moved to Germany. There, he worked as a singer in the stage musical Chicago for six months. This experience led him to a big role in the musical Miss Saigon.
Starring on Television
In 1996, Des got a major role in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. He played the character of Lenny Wallace. This was his first television job. He stayed with the show until 1999.
After EastEnders, Des appeared in other TV shows. These included Is Harry on the Boat? (2001), Casualty (2003), The Bill (2004), and Doctors (2004; 2006). He also acted in the 2001 film Submerged.
Back to the Stage
Des continued his stage career in London's West End. He performed in musicals like Rent and Simply Heavenly. He also served as an understudy for the main role in the musical opera Porgy and Bess.
Becoming a Weather Presenter
Des Coleman's career took an interesting turn. He was working for BBC Radio Derby. One day, he was asked to do the weather report. This led to a new career path!
He trained to become a weather presenter. In 2007, he started presenting for BBC's East Midlands Today television. He left the BBC in 2011.
Des also reported for Inside Out and Politics Show for BBC East Midlands. In March 2016, he presented for BBC Radio Nottingham.
Current Roles
In 2016, Des joined ITV Central's ITV News Central. He became their weather presenter.
On September 8, 2020, and again in August 2021, Des made his first appearances as a guest weather presenter for ITV Breakfast’s Good Morning Britain.
Currently, Des also works as a reporter for The One Show. He also performs on stage as singer Sammy Davis Jr. in a show called The Rat Pack. In this show, he performs alongside impersonators of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
Des Coleman's Personal Life
Des Coleman has faced some health challenges. In November 2018, he was rushed to the hospital. He had a serious health issue in his bowels.
He needed surgery to remove some growths. He spent two days on life support. Thankfully, he made a full recovery three months later, in February 2019.
On April 9, 2020, it was announced that Des Coleman was self-isolating. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
