Desaguadero is a unique town located right on the border between two countries: Peru and Bolivia. Its name means "channel" or "drain" in Spanish. In the Aymara and Quechua languages, it's called Chaka Marka, which means "bridge village." This name is perfect because a special bridge connects the two parts of the town across the border.

The Peruvian side of Desaguadero is in the Puno Region, Chucuito Province. The Bolivian side is in the La Paz Department, Ingavi Province. Both parts of the town are united by a binational bridge, making it a very important border crossing.

Desaguadero is about 86 kilometers (53 miles) from La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia. It's also 146 kilometers (91 miles) from Puno city in Peru and 190 kilometers (118 miles) from Juliaca, another city in Peru.

Climate in Desaguadero

Desaguadero has a tropical subalpine climate, which means it's generally cool and has distinct wet and dry seasons. Even though it's near the equator, its high elevation makes it feel much cooler, like a mountain climate.
