Desh Bandhu Gupta (born February 8, 1938 – died June 26, 2017) was a very successful Indian businessman. He was known for starting a big medicine company called Lupin Limited. This company grew to be a global leader in making medicines. Mr. Gupta was also a kind person who used his wealth to help others. Early Life and Education

Desh Bandhu Gupta was born on February 8, 1938. His birthplace was Rajgarh, Alwar in Rajasthan, India. He was the oldest of five children in his family. He loved learning and went to Bombay University. There, he earned a master's degree in chemistry.

Starting a Business

Mr. Gupta began his career as a professor. He taught at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, Rajasthan. But he soon realized he wanted to do more. He felt he couldn't put his ideas into action as a teacher. So, he decided to become an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is someone who starts their own business.

He moved to Bombay (now called Mumbai). There, he worked for a small British company that made medicines. This job helped him learn about the pharmaceutical industry.

Founding Lupin Limited

In 1968, Desh Bandhu Gupta started his own company, Lupin. He began with a small amount of money, about 5000 Indian Rupees. He even borrowed this money from his wife! Lupin's first office was a small rented space in Mumbai. It was used to send out medicines.

Later, he got a bigger loan from the Central Bank of India. This allowed him to open a factory. One of his first big orders was to make iron and folic acid tablets. These tablets were for government programs that helped mothers and children.

Under Mr. Gupta's guidance, Lupin grew very quickly. It became a global pharmaceutical company. Lupin started selling medicines in many countries, including the United States and Japan.

Helping Communities

Desh Bandhu Gupta believed in giving back to society. In 1988, he created the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation (LHWRF). This foundation aimed to help people in rural areas of India. Its main goal was to lift families out of poverty.

The foundation works on many programs. These programs help create jobs and build important things like roads and schools. They also empower people in villages to improve their own lives. The Lupin Foundation has helped about 2.8 million people. It works in around 3,500 villages across 9 states in India.

Awards and Recognition

Desh Bandhu Gupta received many awards for his work. In 2011, he won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This was for his success in the healthcare field. He also received a Frost & Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

After he passed away, he was honored again. In 2018, he was added to the Hall of Fame at the CNBC TV18 India Business Leader Awards. This shows how much he contributed to business in India.

In 2015, a magazine called Forbes estimated his wealth. They said he was worth about $7.2 billion. This made him one of the richest people in the world.

Desh Bandhu Gupta was married to Manju. They lived in Mumbai, India. He had five children: four daughters and one son. His daughter, Vinita D. Gupta, works in the United States. She is the Group President and CEO of Lupin. His son, Nilesh Gupta, is the Managing Director in India.

Desh Bandhu Gupta passed away on June 26, 2017, in Mumbai. He was 79 years old.
