A Look at Detroit's Past
Detroit was named after the much larger city of Detroit, Michigan. Long ago, people thought Detroit, Kansas, might become the main town for the county. This is called the county seat. But another town, Abilene, was chosen instead. After that, Detroit did not grow much more.
A post office opened in Detroit in 1866. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office closed its doors in 1961. Detroit was also a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. Trains would pass through or stop there.

Detroit is located in Kansas, about halfway between the towns of Abilene and Chapman. It is also about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Enterprise. The town sits at an elevation of about 1,147 feet (350 meters) above sea level.
Detroit has a simple layout. It is shaped like a square, with two blocks going one way and two blocks going the other. There are three streets that run north and south: Main, Middle, and School. Three other streets run east and west: First, Second, and Third. These are the only streets in Detroit. All six streets are unpaved.

What Detroit is Like Today
Years ago, Detroit had many businesses. There was a store, a grocery, and a train station. It also had a school and a church. Today, most of these old buildings are gone. Some have fallen down, and others have been fixed up as homes.
One special place that is still open is a local pub. It has changed owners and names over the years. But people who live nearby often call it "The Midway." It is a well-known spot because it is close to where two county roads meet.
In 1898, a newspaper called The Detroit Free Press started in the town. It tried to get many readers. But records show it only lasted for about a year. This newspaper was not connected to the famous Detroit Free Press from Michigan.
Most of the work in Detroit today is related to farming. This means agriculture and businesses that support farming are very important.
