History of Enterprise

The first people settled in the area of Enterprise in 1868. The town was officially "laid out," or planned, in 1872. It got its name from the "enterprising" spirit of the early settlers. This means they were very active and ready to take on new challenges.

Early Beginnings

The first post office in Enterprise opened in January 1873. This helped people send and receive mail. In 1883, a group called the Enterprise Town Company was formed. They had $50,000 to help the town grow. They elected leaders like V. P. Wilson and C. Hoffman.

Railroads and Transportation

Trains were very important for Enterprise. In 1867, the Kansas Pacific Railroad reached Dickinson County. They built a short track to connect Enterprise to their main line. This made it easier to move goods and people.

Later, in 1886, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built another line. This line helped connect Enterprise to grain elevators and flour mills in Salina. Today, a part of this track is still used by the Abilene and Smoky Valley. This is a special heritage railroad that offers fun train rides.

In 1887, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway also built a line through Enterprise. This railroad later joined with another company in 1996. It is now called the BNSF Railway. But many local people still call it the "Santa Fe."

A Famous Visitor

On January 23, 1901, a well-known leader named Carrie Nation visited Enterprise. She was part of a movement that wanted to stop people from selling alcohol. She and her followers protested at a place that sold alcohol in the city.
