Kirill Aleksandrovich Tolmatsky (born July 22, 1983 – died February 3, 2019) was a famous Russian hip hop artist. Most people knew him by his stage name, Detsl (pronounced "Det-sl"). He became very popular in Russia, especially among young people, in the early 2000s.
Discovering Hip Hop and Early Career
Kirill Tolmatsky was born in Moscow, Russia. His father, Alexandr Tolmatsky, was a well-known music producer. Kirill went to the British International School in Moscow. Later, he studied in Switzerland.
While in Switzerland, his roommate introduced him to hip hop music. Kirill loved it and decided he wanted to become a rapper. When he came back to Moscow, his father helped him start his music career. His father worked with him on his first two albums. During this time, Kirill also worked with a hip hop group called Bad Balance.
Rise to Fame as Detsl
Kirill made his first appearance on the Russian rap scene in 1999. He used the stage name Detsl, which means "a little" or "not much" in Russian slang. His first song was called Friday, and it came with a music video.
In 2000, Detsl released his first album, Who? You. It was a huge success! He quickly became a teen idol across Russia. Young people loved his music and style. In 2001, his second album, Street Fighter, was released.
After performing as Detsl for three years, he wanted to try something new. In 2004, he released his third album under a different name, Le Truk. However, for his next albums, he went back to using Detsl. From 2014 onwards, he used both names: Detsl aka Le Truk.
His Passing
Detsl passed away on February 3, 2019, in Izhevsk, Russia. He was 35 years old. He died from a sudden heart attack after performing at a private birthday party.
Interestingly, Detsl had talked about the idea of disappearing or "faking his own death" when he was 35. He mentioned this in interviews in 2007 and 2015. His funeral was held in Moscow on February 6, and he was buried at the Pyatnitskoye Cemetery.
