Devils Hill Falls is a beautiful waterfall located on Devils Hill Brook. You can find it on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. It's about 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) south of the Mira River.
This amazing waterfall has three main parts. The top part is a "classical ledge waterfall" which means the water falls straight down from a rock ledge. It's about 6 metres (20 ft) tall! After that, the water flows down a "cascade," which is like a mini-waterfall with lots of small steps. This leads to the lower falls, which is another classical ledge waterfall, about 4.5 metres (15 ft) high. The falls are just a short drive from the community of Catalone.
Exploring the Devils Hill Road Trail
Getting to the falls is a fun, short hike! It's only about 230 metres (750 ft) from New Boston Road. You'll walk to a small bridge that crosses the brook. The lower falls are right below this bridge. If you want to see the upper falls, just follow a path along the east side of the brook for about 60 metres (200 ft) upstream.
The path you walk on is actually an old road called Devils Hill Road. It used to go all the way to Terra Nova. After you visit the falls, it's worth walking further down this old road. The area opens up, and you can see some really wonderful views, especially in the fall when the leaves change color.
Even though the New Boston Road end of Devils Hill Road isn't kept up by the province anymore, it's still a public road. This means everyone is welcome to use it. After about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi), the road gets better and you might even see a few homes before it meets Terra Nova Road.
There's a local story about how Devils Hill got its name. People say that a man met the Devil on this road one night. This happened in the late 1800s when he was walking home from a dance. He was coming from either Mira Ferry or New Boston.
Long ago, there were many farms along this road that led to the Mira River. Some of these farms were owned by German families. But now, all those farms are gone, and the land has returned to forest.
Finding a Hidden Treasure: Geocaching
Did you know there's a hidden treasure at the falls? It's a small traditional geocache! Geocaching is like a real-world treasure hunt using GPS. This geocache has been there since February 2005, and you can find it any time of year.
