Dewi Morgan (1877 – 1971) was a famous Welsh poet, writer, and journalist. He was also known by his special poet name, "Dewi Teifi". He won a very important poetry award, the Chair, at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Pwllheli in 1925. He won it for his long poem about the old legend of Cantre'r Gwaelod.
About Dewi Morgan
Dewi Morgan was born David Morgan in 1877. His birthplace was 'Bryndderwen' in Dôl-y-Bont, Cardiganshire, Wales. His parents were William Morgan and Jane James. When Dewi was two years old, his family moved to Pen-y-garn. His father opened a grocery shop there called Garn House.
Dewi Morgan did not have much formal schooling. He mostly taught himself. He became a master of a special Welsh poetry style called Cynghanedd. This style has very strict rules for sound and rhythm.
His Poetry Journey
Dewi often took part in local poetry competitions called eisteddfodau. He won his first poetry Chair when he was 22 years old. Winning the Chair at the National Eisteddfod in 1925 was a huge achievement.
He said two people greatly influenced his life. One was John Evans, the headmaster of Rhydypennau School. The other was his close friend, the famous writer T. Gwynn Jones. Through this friendship, Dewi learned even more about Welsh literature. He also explored wider European literature. Many other Welsh scholars and academics were his friends, including T. H. Parry-Williams and T. E. Nicholas.
Dewi Morgan also encouraged many young poets and writers. One of them was Tom Macdonald, who lived near Dewi in Pen-y-garn. Tom Macdonald often wrote about Dewi's positive influence on him.
His Work as a Journalist
For many years, Dewi Morgan worked as a sub-editor for a Welsh newspaper called Baner ac Amserau Cymru. He also worked for Y Tyst. Later, he became the Welsh editor at the Cambrian News newspaper.
His Family Life
Dewi Morgan was married three times. His first wife was Minnie Davies. Later, he married Olwen Eluned Jones. She passed away in 1947. His last marriage was to Sarah Margaretta Morgan in 1950.
Dewi Morgan had several children. His second son, Dafydd Elystan Morgan, became a well-known figure. Dewi's grandchild, Lleucu Roberts, is also an author.
